How do I play my music randomly (shuffle mode)?

To shuffle a certain music selection (such as an artist or album) simply start the playback of one track of the desired music selection and activate the shuffle symbol in the play screen (next to the timeline).

To shuffle all tracks in your music library make sure you have the TRACKS column open only (i.e. close all other columns) and then play one track and activate the shuffle function.

So my question is...will shuffle ONLY work within the context of an 'artist' or 'album'? Usually shuffle is desirable in a broader context, such as for the entire music library, or for a smaller grouping, such as a playlist, is that possible? If it would not work for the entire library, but it would with a playlist, at least we could create a custom playlist with as much content as desired, and then enable shuffle for it.

    Hello Ron,

it works for any music selection (also playlists). Simply start the playback for the music selection and activate shuffle. It then plays the tracks randomly within the selection.

Hi Olive ONE support. I use my ONE almost exclusively in shuffle mode via the TRACKS column (only). But the same shuffled songs typically come up up when I playback -- even after a re-boot (I have thousands of tracks to randomize from but am not plumbing the depth of my library). Any suggestions? Thanks and tidings,

gahster, I am experiencing a very similar issue when using shuffle inside of large playlists. The shuffle algorithm seems to want to shuffle only among a small block of music files before moving onto the next group. For example, I have playlists that contain hundreds of albums, when I launch the playlist in shuffle mode, it does shuffle, but picks between tracks in the first 4-5 albums almost exclusively until it has exhausted all the tracks in that group and moves onto another group of 4-5 albums.

Olive...before I submit a feature request for this, is there a way to play the entire music library, and in shuffle mode? If this can currently be done, how? If not, I will submit a feature request. The workaround, which I really would rather not do, is to create a playlist with everything in it.

Hello Ron, yes that is possible as described in the FAQ: "To shuffle all tracks in your music library make sure you have the TRACKS column open only (i.e. close all other columns) and then play one track and activate the shuffle function". For UPnP sources you would need to have a selection that lists all the tracks in your music category in one column. Thanks!

Thank you! I will try it and hope I don't get the same issue as gahster and myself when in playlist with shuffle enabled, as per my comments above.

    Hmm

I've found that entire-library shuffle works, but...
When the device is turned off (say, for the night), resuming playback is extremely unpredictable.
Sometimes the device picks up much earlier in the playlist than the place it left off - but it IS playing the list, not just reshuffling. With 18,000 songs, scrolling through to find the active song is not practical. Sometimes, if I remember the list was on about song 600, I can just tap that song to start from that point.
Sometimes it refuses to play at all.
This morning, it seemed to be working off a different playlist than the one it showed. Tapping song 600 "In the Night", played "Slow Poison". The playlist advanced one by one, but always showing different song titles than the song actually playing (showed correctly on the main display).

The result makes playing music on shuffle impractical.

Is it possible to use random play within all the albums of one artist?
