How do I transfer music from Olive HD to Olive ONE?

You can simply copy the music from your Olive Music Server to your PC/MAC via XBMC (Kodi) and from there to your ONE.

Please follow these step-by-step instructions:

Step 1. Pick up and plug in an empty portable hard drive.

Step 2. Download and install XBMC. We have received that the latest builds of XBMC do not work any more for music transfer and we recommend to install one of the previous builds (10.1 or 12.3) which you can download at

http://mirrors.kodi.tv/releases/

Step 3. Launch XBMC. Along the left hand side are options: Weather, Pictures, Music, Videos etc... Move the cursor over the System option.

Step 4. Under System, you will see a small faint arrow pointing to the right. This indicates a pull-out menu. Move your cursor right to see the pull-out menu and select File Manager.

Step 5. The screen should now look now like a big cog with two menus; one on the left, one on the right. Beginning with the left, select Add Source. By selecting Browse, you should be able to see your Olive named in the file structure. Select it. Do the same on the right side, but this time browse to yourexternal hard drive (or to where ever you are storing the data). Note: The right side in XBMC has to be a directory that is writeable, otherwise you will not be able to copy the music from the left side (i.e. your music server).

Step 6. Double click on your Olive Name. You should see a list beginning with two dots, followed by Album, Artist etc... One click selects the option, two clicks digs into it.

Step 7. At this stage you can right click on an option, and you will have the ability to copy. If you choose copy at this time, it moves the file from the left side (your Olive) to the right (your hard drive). Alternatively, you can double click on Album or Artist, and you will dig further in to your Olive. At that point you can select several, or all of the albums/artists/playlists, right click, and copy to the drive.

Note:
1) Please make sure to disable any firewall / anti-virus program during the transfer. This may cause the transfer to stall or the music server library not to show up at all in XBMC.
2) Although XBMC is also available for the Mac we have heard from several customers that it does not work properly for the music transfer.
3) Please make sure the music you transfer to the Olive ONE has the proper file extensions (e.g. ".flac" for FLAC files). If your music was stored in WAV format on your music server it will unfortunately not have any metadata due to the limitations of this format. However you can add metadata via acoustic fingerprinting software such as http://picard.musicbrainz.org
4) Here is an interesting tutorial from one of our customers: http://imgur.com/a/ocaix#10

It is also possible to do it with Foobar2000 (media player for PC), provided that you make a full installation including ‘File Ops’ component. It allows file naming patterns.

Another option is to copy the music directly from your USB backup drive (backup must have been done with software 4.3.2). If you have a PC with Windows 8 or Linux OS (or know someone who does) you can copy the music from the USB backup drive. Note: there are also tools for Windows that allow you to access the backup drive so you do not necessarily need a Linux PC. Here are 2 sample links that cover this topic: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/accessing-a-linux-ext2-or-ext3-partiton-from-windows/ and http://www.howtogeek.com/112888/3-ways-to-access-your-linux-partitions-from-windows/. For Macs you can use http://www.paragon-software.com/home/extfs-mac/

Once the USB HDD is recognized please look for the AUDIO LIBRARY folder. This will contain the music files (note: music that is stored in WAV format will not contain any metadata). Please copy the AUDIO LIBRARY folder to your Mac/PC and from there to the Olive ONE (via network or USB HDD, please see https://olivemediainc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/200540435-3-Transferring-music-to-the-internal-hard-disk-drive-HDD-)

For somebody like me who is not a PC-Freak your instructions to copy the music-library from my Olive 4HD to the harddisk of the ONE are not usefull. I have 3000 CD on my ONE and I need a more intuitive and easy way to do this migration. With XBMC it is not possible to copy such a big library and I think it will not copy all the tags of the 4HD-Files. For the purpose to copy the backup, your information are not detailed enough to do such a work. There also you would loose the metadata from the maestro software. This is unacceptable. I need a better instruction or a service to do this migration for me without loosing the metadatas that I changed with maestro. If Olive is not able to offer such a service I will sell my ONE and I will change to an other Server/Streamer System. Sorry.

When I purchased my One I was told that It would come with the music(1100 cd's) transferred onto the internal HD,from my olive3hd that you had me send in trade.
When my ONE arrived it appeared to have been shipped direct from your factory and did not have any of my music installed.
I was assured that I would be able the transfer my music from my other Olive,a 4HD,
But after 3 months of trying I still have not been able to do it.
When I reached the end of my satisfaction return eligability period,I was told not to
worry if I couldn't make it work I could return it.
Unless you can solve my issue,I'd like to return the unit for a refund.

I am so disapointed that Olive is not able to support the transfer from an Olive HD to the One. I will sell the ONE and throw away the 4HD. Now I must rip my 2500 Cd a second time but to a more serious device. Thank you for this waist of time. Never more OLIVE !

On XBMC 10.1 and 12.3 there are no options to copy musicfiles ...

Hello Dieter, if the "copy" option does not show up it means you probably have not selected a destination on the right side that is writeable to. The destination on the right side needs to be the folder on your PC/Mac or a USB HDD that you want to copy the music to. You need to have the rights to write to this destination and it needs to have enough capacity for the music you want to copy.

Ok, I tried another time to copy an Album to my PC and it worked !
After this I tried to copy this Album to the One Import Folder and it worked !
But ... after re-sync I can see the artists and the Album in the Folder but not in the library. In the Folder I just can see the Artist and Album but not the tracks ... In the Import-Folder on my PC i can see the tracks. I re-synced several times but without result. Where are the tracks ? And why the One do not shows them in the Folder and in the library ? As you can see, my english is very rudimentary. Is there no support in german ?

I think the problem is, that the tracks copied with xbmc from the 4UD has no ".flac" nomination !? Why ? and what can I do ?

Hello Dieter, this is indeed the problem. You need to add the file extensions. Here is the FAQ about this topic: https://olivemediainc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/202386535-None-of-my-imported-music-shows-up-on-the-ONE-s-user-interface

I'm still working on this with my newly acquired Olive One, I don't have the definitive answer. There are numerous ways to do this, but the easiest is to map the Olive HDD as a network drive and then use the PC to copy/move files.

Usng a portable hard drive as an interim strikes me as archaic and slow.
